Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.

Quotes from the American Taliban:

Gary North(Institute for Christian Economics)-
"The long-term goal of Christians in politics should be to gain exclusive control over the franchise. Those who refuse to submit publicly to the eternal sanctions of God by submitting to His Church's public marks of the covenant–baptism and holy communion–must be denied citizenship."

Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin -
“George Bush was not elected by a majority of the voters in the United States, he was appointed by God.”

Pat Robertson (Christian Coalition) -
"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians."

Randall Terry (Operation Rescue) -
"I want you to just let a wave of intolerance wash over. I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good...Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a biblical duty, we are called by God to conquer this country. We don't want equal time. We don't want pluralism."

Unfortunately there are more.

Oh Dear. I am afraid. People in Europe find such attitudes and statements deplorable, while many Americans, including those in high office, have yet to understand why the US is so loathed by so many in the world.

Fortunately, in the UK, the church is mostly separate from the state.

This country's Constitution emphasizes the separation of Church and State, which makes some of those statements unconstitutional. Those people are the lunatic fringe, but they do influence the weak-minded in large numbers. I think that more of us react to them as Europeans do. I wish more people knew that we don't all support Bush, that we're not all so ethnocentristic.

I think most reasonable people here do realize that. Unfortunately, good news seldom travels, bad news does. And that "lunatic fringe" does seem to consist of a rather large number of pretty powerful characters who, sadly, appear to have escaped the asylum.

I've been told that Randall Terry was kicked out of Operation Rescue, the group he founded, because he left his wife for the secretary he was having an affair with.

Mr. Family Values has three children in their 20's. One of them became a drug addict, one pregnant before marriage, and one is gay. Mr. Loving Father told all three they were going to Hell. None of the children have anything to do with their “father”.
